Introduction
As an expert in the fitness industry since May 2001 and even an athlete starting as a thirteen year-old in my freshman year of high school, I have in some point or another experienced the difficulties of one (or myself) reaching an optimal fitness capacity while maintaining a given, but oftentimes, limited budget. At the end, some may have to settle for what is given to them although it may not get them to reach those heights they truly desire and deserve. Let's face it; fitness has adopted the bad reputation of being a luxury. As a child who desires to improve her speed and strength in swimming or a mother who would like to support her son's football endeavors by investing in summer football camp, there is an economic price to pay to the insurance company, sports retail store, transportation to games and/or especially the sports fitness coach. Furthermore, what about the seventy-five percent of individuals in America who do not exercise or belong to a fitness club? This may be you or someone who you probably know. In order to "pull the trigger" and make that wise decision to take control of your health, one also has to take in consideration of investing in a fitness club that may have long-term contracts, expensive rates to pay off their equipment lease, or a personal trainer that makes more per hour than him and his spouse combined.
Let us not forget about the point of this book. The disadvantages of technology or the advantage of the lack thereof is important as it relates to our health and fitness. Let's say Joe lives in the nineteenth century and wants to eat an apple pie for dessert following his large plate of steak and potatoes. Although this single meal may easily reach 2500 calories, there were a lot of calories previously burned before Joe sat at the dinner table for dinner. For example, the apples had to be physically expelled from the climbed tree. Considering electricity did not find its way in homes, Joe needed to chop wood to build a fire for the pie steak and potatoes. Unless it was purchased from the butcher, the cow had to be slaughtered for consumption. Do you catch my drift? Calories were already expended prior to eating these large-calorie-meals because people had to constantly move in order to survive. Joe did not invest in the South Beach Diet, Jenny Craig, Lifestyle Family Fitness or Atkins to maintain his weight. Furthermore, although he consumed high quantities of carbohydrates, weight gain was not an issue as long as he balanced it with consistent movement. Do not let anyone tell you to "lay off the carbs" or eat only grapefruits at the crack of dawn as the key to reaching your weight loss goals.
Today, thanks to TV dinners, pizza deliveries, remote controls and Netflix we are getting fatter while eating less due to our overall lack of movement. Think about it, zebras in Africa spend a tremendous time in their life eating and grazing. They are also constantly on the move looking for more food and avoiding predators. Have you ever seen a fat zebra? No, because they are consuming the same or less calories than they are expending. Whether you are running on a treadmill or jumping rope at home, you will burn fat and can lose weight as long as those calories exceed the calories you are consuming. If you burn 2500 calories per day (includes your resting metabolic rate) and consume 2000 calories then you are at a 500 calorie deficit per day which means you will lose one pound of fat per week.
Too often the diet and weight-loss industries try to market their products and solutions as being the only method for reaching your goals.
