The phenomenon of winter is the need to conserve and replenish. This can be seen in nature: most animals hibernate or remain near their nests, only venturing forth to replenish their food supply. Winter is a time to gather in, to remain still and quiet. Trees have pulled their resources in and hold them deep within their trunks and roots.
Human beings should gather their energy in as well. To remain healthy in the winter, both physically and emotionally, it is important to conserve energy, to rest when tired and sleep later if possible. A quote from the Chinese medical classics reinforces this: "Retire early at night and rise late in the morning; wait for the rising of the sun."
A good winter means a powerful spring. The cold and dark of the winter enable the seeds to gather power for their energetic start in the spring. This gestation time of winter is important. It is a great time to take stock and gather your energy.
The element of winter is Water. It controls our ability to flow through life and emotions. Too little Water and we become brittle and inflexible, too much and we are drowning. The modern Western tendency is toward too little of the Water element.
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is characterized by "symptoms of increased fatigue, increased sleep duration and increased appetite and weight." The interesting aspect of this characterization is that it describes the natural order in the winter. Nature designed this time of year to be one in which we, along with animals and plants, need more sleep and therefore experience fatigue. The basic premise is that a person who has these symptoms is depressed. Other symptoms included decreased social interaction.
From a Chinese Medicine perspective these very symptoms are what should be expected during the season of cold and dark. It is only through modern inventions that we are even able to contemplate living with the same level of energy and social interaction during the winter months that we would expect in the summer. Formerly, we were constrained by that very same darkness and cold to be more interior during this season. Light faded early and human beings did not extend their time awake much beyond the sunset. This resulted in more hours of sleep and less activity.
Inactivity or less activity increases weight gain even when the same number of calories are ingested. Lesser activity is actually a natural aspect of the winter, again as reflected in the animals' behavior. In addition, the winter is a time when higher carbohydrate foods are generally eaten. Root vegetables were stored for winter eating, hence the name "root cellar." The foods that preserved best tended to be higher in carbohydrates, even dried fruits have concentrated sugars compared to their fresh brethren. The weight gain may also be attributed to the easy availability of food. Previously winter food was only what the family or community had stored from their harvest and had to last the entire winter. Overeating at this time of year was rare and even dangerous to the survival of the individual and family.
For modern man overeating, heightened activity and minimal sleep are all considered normal. Think about the time from November through early January. At least in Western cultures we are expected to be very active. Holiday parties and shopping consume our nonworking hours. Social engagements are increased and woe to the person who chooses not to participate. He or she is considered antisocial and depressed. The party food generally consists of high carbohydrate snacks and meals. Is it any wonder people gain weight?
Winter energy demands rest and more sleep just as summer energy should include less sleep, heightened activity and social engagement. Perhaps we should take a longer look at our expectations before labeling something that is quite natural as symptomatic of an illness. Expecting the different energies of the seasons to not affect how people behave and feel is denying the true nature of human beings.

It was also seen that the reduced intake of insulin did help in the reduction of the fat mass present in the abdominal region.
This medical journal article also showed that the intake of a healthy diet would help modulate energetic foods that are their macronutrient composition. It is because they have a positive effect on curbing the risk of getting diabetes as well as the sensitivity towards it. Besides that it was also seen that weight loss and maintaining weight on a long term basis could be a difficult task that required a proper diet and discipline to follow it through. The main conclusion that was drawn from this study was that weight could in fact be regulated by the use of various methods and techniques. There was once a church that decided to bring their absentee members back into the fold. The preacher went to see one member for that purpose. His visit took him so far out in the country that you'd have to walk five miles back toward town just to start picking up firewood.
When he finally located the rundown house and property, he was greeted by a crusty, old graybeard. The coffee was good, however, and the conversation easy.
Finally, the preacher got to the point of the visit and heated up the rebuke to the point that the man had a change of heart and returned to church. He then wanted to work.
He was given some church stationary and told to write to those on a list, in an effort to get them to return just as he'd done. After a few weeks the church received a check and a note from one on the list. He said that he was making up his contributions and that he would be in his rightful place the following Sunday. He then added, "Please notify your church secretary that there is only one "l" in "filthy" and no "c" in "skunk."
It's a case where you admire a person's enthusiasm, but question his wisdom. But, he did the best he knew how.
What about the rest of us? I have specific reference to how rude we can be, even when there is no need to be. When it's as easy or easier to be polite.
All of this brings to mind something I've experienced since barberosophy.com was launched some time ago. Since that time I've gathered e-mail addresses of various contacts (as well as those who contacted me) and added them to a growing list to receive a weekly Barber-osophy column. Most seem to appreciate it. The few who don't, however, never take the nice approach. Instead of simply clicking on the unsubscribe option they send rude messages.
Without taking it personally, I nonetheless have done some analysis of the reasons for such an approach. Granted, part of the problem is simply a reaction to "spamming." They are unable to distinguish between that and legitimate use of the Internet. Aside from that, however, I think the cause for the rudeness might be the same as for rudeness to which we are all susceptible on other occasions.
It might be a simple case of the cat-kicking-syndrome. This is where a person is upset over something totally unrelated to the family cat. It might involve an incident with a co-worker, the boss, a customer or someone in traffic. Regardless, the person is looking for someone to kick. The family cat better not be in the person's path when he/she walks in the door.
Our reactions to people and circumstances are often that way. Instead of dealing with the person or situation directly, we tend to kick someone who is totally innocent. The person who takes the "hit" is often oblivious to what precipitated it, and takes the attack personally. The aggressor, on the other hand, knows better and under normal circumstances conducts himself/herself with more class.
The lesson here is twofold: (1) On those days when things go badly, beware of cat kicking conduct. (2) If you happen to be the "cat of the day," don't take it personally.

It is not news to us that the United States is suffering from an obesity epidemic, both in adults and children. What is shocking, however, is the fact that children are still not being encouraged to become more physically active. More specifically, students are being given the choice to opt-out of gym class in school, as discussed in a recent article written by Sarah Netter of ABC News.
In a society where sitting still for the majority of the day has become the norm, schools should be doing their part to not only educate their students mentally, but also physically. Physical education classes have been around for decades, yet they are becoming more obsolete than ever before. This is happening despite the push from doctors, nutritionists, and health campaigns to get children more active. Being obese and overweight has become the number one health problem in children. A study in the New England Journal of Medicine reported that obese children were twice as likely to die of disease by age 55.
Students are being allowed to opt-out of gym class in favor of activities such as marching band, ROTC, or art class. Some schools are even offering online gym class, which only requires students to verify that they've completed exercise on their own time, even if they haven't.
"This is a serious issue," said Keith Ayoob, director of the nutrition clinic at the Rose F. Kennedy Center. "If they don't get anything in school they're probably not going to get it."
Only five states in the entire country (Illinois, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Mexico and Vermont) require p.e. at every grade level. We should applaud these schools for taking the initiative, but at the same time we wonder: shouldn't every school make p.e. a requirement at every grade level? Maybe p.e. class has gotten a bad reputation over the years. It's a vicious cycle: those who are already physically active excel and most likely enjoy the class, while those who are overweight or obese and actually need it go through the motions with little enthusiasm. The activities performed in p.e. class are also rarely strenuous workouts and most schools don't even offer daily gym class for their students.
NASPE and the American Heart Association recommend that students get 30 minutes per day of physical education instruction for elementary school children and 45 minutes per day for middle and high school children. However, only one state (Alabama) follows the guidelines at each grade level, as reported by the NASPE.
